JaME's Visual Kei Playlist

As a movement defined by both its sound and aesthetics, visual kei has been able to absorb influences from a wide range of seemingly disparate genres and subcultures over the years. It has also become significantly more accessible to overseas fans than it was just a decade ago. You can now stream releases from even relatively new and unknown groups on online distribution platforms immediately after they come out, for free. However, some of the bands can still be a bit tricky to track down due to their simple or unusual name choices. With this in mind, members of our team have compiled some of their favourite visual kei tracks available on Spotify to help you find some new additions to your libraries.

The list features tracks from some of the scene’s defining acts, as well as modern mainstays, newer bands that are just starting to make waves and even some disbanded and lesser known groups that may have slipped under even the most devoted fans' radars. Containing everything from elegant ballads to aggressive hard rock and metal songs to catchy pop rock tunes and campy, theatrical tracks, it’s an eclectic mix that we hope captures some of the unique charm of the scene. While it’s just a small selection of what is available on Spotify, we hope it will serve as both a handy introduction for newcomers to visual kei looking for new bands to add to their own playlists and a fun trip down memory lane for veteran fans.
