BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2023 at Verti Music Hall, Berlin

At one point not so long ago, it seemed that BABYMETAL’s story was coming to a conclusion. Between a depleted line-up after YUIMETAL’s departure, nearly two years without shows, a cryptic message in late 2021, and an abundance of 10th anniversary content, from LP and book releases to an exhibition museum, everything seemed headed in the same direction. Then came the announcement of a new album in October 2022. In January 2023, BABYMETAL finally returned to the stage to play two shows promoting The Other One, their fourth album.

Shortly after the album's release in March, BABYMETAL embarked on a European tour with Sabaton and Lordi, which made it somewhat surprising to see them back in the Old Continent so soon. However, those were shorter sets in front of a very different crowd. This time around, it was clear that thousands of people had come to Berlin's Verti Music Hall to see BABYMETAL as the main attraction.

The show opened with BABYMETAL DEATH, this time followed by another classic, Gimme Chocolate!!, and then PA PA YA!!. The set list did not seem to revolve around any particular album, and throughout the night songs were heard from BABYMETAL, Metal Galaxy, Metal Resistance, and The Other One. The recent METALI!! was present as well and could very well be considered a highlight of the show with its contagious energy, crowd chants and guitar solo, courtesy of an on-screen Tom Morello.


There was no hint of rustiness from their pandemic hiatus and the show was everything one could expect from such an experienced act: a flawless performance (including a brief display of KAMI Band's virtuosity mid-set), stunning visuals, and a well-honed ability to work the crowd through sing-alongs and mosh pits. A videographer occasionally stepped on stage to film the crowd, with these images being projected behind the band and adding to the environment and sense of synchronicity between band and audience.

At the end of the show, a pre-recorded voiceover promised new things on the horizon for BABYMETAL. While it is still unknwon if that means new music on the way, fans can rest easy knowing that their touring activities will not stop, as there are already shows scheduled in 2024 across three continents, including some of Europe's biggest metal festivals. With MOMOMETAL now a full-fledged member, BABYMETAL are definitely ready for the challenge.
