MONO formed in Tokyo in October 1999, at that time only consisting of three members: Goto on guitar, Takada on drums and Yoda as the second guitarist. In January of the following year, they gave their first big live and two months later, Tamaki joined them on bass and completed the line-up that still hasn't changed up until now.

Their first mini-album Hey, You was released in September 2000 and a little later that year they had a concert in New York's Mercury Lounge. In spring 2001, they performed at the famous SXSW festival in Texas for the first time and gave various concerts until their first real album Under the papal tree was released in November. After additional lives in the United States, they went to Europe for the first time, to Sweden to be exact.

In 2002 they appeared at SXSW again and released their second album One step more and you die in the fall. After a few concerts in their home country, they had a big tour in the United States. Mono played about 22 gigs in total, a number that was still about be topped during their following tours through this country.

Over the years, the band had always been on the roll, giving concerts in their home country, in Europe or America, being at festivals all over the world, touring with befriended groups or releasing their albums on different continents.

Their recent piece You are there came out at the beginning of 2006 and was not only released in Japan, Europe and America, but in Korea as well. In March, they toured together with several other bands in their home country and played some gigs for their Korean neighbours the month afterwards.

In May and June, they toured through the United States together with Pelican and at the end of June and during July, they travelled to Europe for concerts and festival appearances.
