metronome first started in August of 1998 with the line-up of Sharaku on vocals, Kenumaki on drums, Fukusuke on guitar and Yazi on bass. This line-up ended up being very short-lived as Fukusuke and Yazi left and EyexGxA and ASUKA hime replaced them. By the end of of 1998, ASUKA hime left the band and Kei replaced him as bassist. With this line-up, metronome’s first demo out of many was released in early February 1999, titled 8bit girls bravo.

In May of 1999, Fukusuke and Yazi came back to the band, but the next month Yazi left yet again. Even without an official bassist, leaving metronome a three member band, they still were able to release their first single in July entitled, Single Top Religion. For the next year, there was not much activity except for smaller lives until their first of three themed lives on May 7th, 2000, which was titled Chishiryou Freak Shourei.1. The other two themed lives were held on August 8th and September 9th. It was also this year when Kenumaki decided to leave the band. At the end of 2000, on December 9th, metronome played their first one-man live.

At the beginning of 2001, Art Pop Records started to release metronome’s maxi-single YAPUU no shoukansareta machi nationwide. And then in April, they gained a new bassist, Riu, and changed the names of the members' positions. Sharaku changed from the vocalist to VOICE, Fukusuke as guitarist change to TALBO-1 and the new bassist,Riu was TALBO-2. Except for their first in store event on the August 1st, there wasn’t much activity for the rest of the year until they gained a new drummer, Yuichiro, in December.

With Art Pop Records they released their first mini-album in January 2002, Fukigen na ANDROID and the next month joined Gargoyle on a two man tour. In April, an event was held with various artist to celebrate the ten year anniversary of when Sharaku and Fukusuke met. The rest of the year was filled with one-man lives and a couple of maxi-single releases released under Shibuya records and Tricycle ENTERTAINMENT.

By the beginning of 2003, metronome‘s popularity was growing and they were selling out venues with one thousand people capacity with their one-man lives. Finally, in April metronome released their first album 1Metronome under Tricycle RECORDS. For the rest of 2003, the band did many one-man tours and released one maxi-single containing a DVD in September called su.be.e.su ! romatic . Also at the end of the year, metronome’s fanclub Sample Rate opened up to fans. 2004 ended up being full of one-man tours and new releases. LIFO, their mini-album that was released in November, went all the way to the Oricon indies album chart to seventh place. In addition to metronome’s activities, Sharaku also formed a new solo project with Hiromu Toda from neuron and Shinjuku Gewalt called FLOPPY.

On January 4th 2005 the band did their annual fanclub meeting and a few months later in April, they did a charity performance called FOR ALL CHILDREN for the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. The rest of 2005 included many lives; a lot of them were large events with other bands such as Beautiful Freaks #10 with Fatima. In July, metronome was featured in an omnibus live DVD called Yoshigen Yuukoujouyaku along with Phantasmagoria, Vidoll, .LAB , and THE BASEMENT. On October 5th, their mini-album Electric Travel was released containing five tracks and the first press contained the bonus of an original screensaver. For the rest of 2005, the band was on tour for this release.

2006 was a year full of mostly one-man lives and huge events for the band. That year saw only two maxi-singles, Boku Sonzaisetsu and Zetsubou San which were sold only at lives and through Art Pop’s website. The next year started off with fanclub lives and Art Pop ENTERTAINMENT lives. In the month of April, metronome released their first live DVD, Cycle Re-Cycle ~May Day X'mas~. The next month in May Yuichiro left the band and later joined the band Boogieman. The band continued on through the year without a drummer, even releasing two singles without one. Finally in November, Shintarou (ex-Iroha) joined the band as the new drummer.

2008 was a special year for Metronome as it was their 10th anniversary. That year they only released three albums and the first came out in February called HIGH TO LOW ELECTRO. It even went all the way up to twelfth place in Oricon’s indies album chart. At the end of 2008 came two of the band’s best of albums, COLLECTION and COLLECTION 2. On December 25, 2008 they held their anniversary live called 10th Anniversary Special ONE MAN LIVE which was released as a DVD the next year in February.

metronome announced at the beginning of February of 2009 they would go on indefinite pause after their one-man live at Shibuya C.C. Lemon Hall on May 31.
