PASSPO☆, a ten-girl idol group, made their major debut on the label Universal Music with their single Shoujo hikou. Using the theme of flight attendants, the girls show they are ready to take off and join the big leagues; their cute and cheery voices rival that of any current pop idol group.

Shoujo hikou begins with a pop of energy. The sweet, bouncy melody instantly hooks you in, and the sparkling guitar play gives the song a light, airy feel. It’s a song that instantly makes you feel glad to have heard it, and the only thing missing is its lack of complexity. With ten girls, there could have been more interesting harmonizing. However, the simplicity of the song doesn’t make it any less enjoyable.

The second track, Uhai!!, has a challenging air during the verses as the girls sing like they’re revving themselves up for a fight. The speedy tempo and edgier guitar lines combine for a high-octane track, and one can almost see the dance steps that must accompany the song. The chorus is smooth and open, showcasing all the girls at their best.

PASSPO☆ kicks off their major debut with a strong single. Singing about strength, hope and determination, their message is easy to appreciate and their voices are easy on the ears. For those who enjoy Morning Musume or AKB48, PASSPO☆ is worth checking out, and those overseas will soon have the chance as the group is embarking on a world tour.

Due to the tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011, the release has been postponed until May.
