TEMPTATION

Yoshida Minako

The very first work of soul diva Yoshida Minako under the sub-label avex io was her single TEMPTATION. She has been active since the early seventies, but does this mean that only the older generation will like her musical style? Or could younger people also like her music?

The title song of the same name presents itself as solid soul number, with R&B elements and a voice that has something of the magic of Tina Turner. The groovy beat and the gospel-like chorus during the refrain, as well as the low piano chords and the well-rounded digitalized accompaniment, could get the youth interested in the aged soul musician as well. As for the very quiet coupling track FOOTSTEPS, the situation is different; the retro charm of the song might seem too old-fashioned to a new generation.

Behind the so called “TV TRACKS” are hidden the accompanying instrumental songs. Here, both songs - especially the coupling track - can collect points. In the instrumental of FOOTSTEPS, the harmonica stands out better, and it brings out the very relaxing character of the song.

You can definitely take a chance on TEMPTATION; it's not just for those who like soul music. If you're uncertain, you can sample it before making a decision. The groovy title track and the instrumental version of the coupling track give the single its worth.
