Ayumi’s first single of 2008 also marks the tenth anniversary since her major debut with Avex. The single was released in six different editions, with Type A editions containing the remixed version of YOU as the second B-side and Type B containing the remixed Depend on you. All versions include the first B-side track Life.

Mirrorcle World is actually the completed version of Mirror, the intro track off Ayumi’s album Guilty. The song begins with a revamped intro of soft violins that sets a soft, romantic mood. However, it quickly changes as electronic trilling and a crisp beat kick in. In sharp minor key, the song then explodes in a frenzy of sound, transforming into an uncompromising rock song. Ayumi’s low, clear vocals are powerful throughout, and the repetitive synthesized screeching add a thrilling sense of urgency to the song. In a grand way, Mirrorcle World seems to be Ayumi’s declaration to the world: she’s still here and she’s not close to finished yet.

In contrast to the speedy Mirrorcle World, Life is a slower ballad. With a short instrumental intro, Life dives right in without much preamble. The song is sweetly simple with its easy melody and swaying beat, and while Ayumi’s voice is lighter she doesn’t fall into the trap of getting overly nasal. There is much less electronic arrangement on this track, everything is stripped down to just drums, guitars and Ayumi.

YOU was originally released as one of Ayumi’s first singles, and the tenth anniversary version shows how much she has changed over time. She uses a deeper voice on the track, although in reflection of the original it is still a little too sharp and thin to be completely pleasing, and the use of guitars and drums are more prominent throughout. This new version of YOU is moderately catchy but nothing earth shattering, still, it serves as a nice way for Ayumi’s fans to reminiscence.

The tenth anniversary version of Depend on you also features deeper vocals and has been made into more of a rock track. Short guitar solos litter the song and help drive it along. This version is also longer than the original with its additional verses and extended instrumental ending; the ending is actually better than the original and is a really nice conclusion.

Instrumental versions of all the songs are included on their respective editions.

Released in celebration of ten years in the music business, Mirrorcle World is a fantastic single that shows off Ayumi’s talents and current tastes. Her brisk vocals take the foreground, and rock influence shows in all her musical arrangements. And even though much has changed for Ayumi in ten years, her ability to produce a hit has not: the single is definitely one to be savored!
