The band was made by the vocalist Otogi during the fall of 2004. He invited guitarist Ryoga, bassist Mio and drummer Hiro to join him and form the band. With this line-up, they played a few performances and on the band released their first single, Kokoro, on May 1st. In October, another single, Koi Karasu, was released, but at the end of the year, Ryoga and Mio suddenly left the band, with one of them joining Gemini and another going to Pablo Honey. However, Otogi managed to quickly replace them with guitarist Shou and bassist Saki.

With a new line-up, Awoi released two discs in 2006: the single Ame no Itaitami in July and maxi-single Makkura, Makkuro, Makkaka na Asa in September. In 2007 they played several concerts in Osaka and Nagoya, then on the 9th of April the musicians released the second maxi-single Yuuyake Karasu, which was followed by a tour.

On the 21st of October Awoi played at the Osaka Muse for the band’s third anniversary. A few weeks later, the third maxi-single, Nakunaranai uta, was released. Then, in July 2008, they released another one called DEADMAN and shot their first PV. For the rest of the year, the band performed in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. On the 8th of November they played at Osaka Muse with Lycaon, R-Shitei(R-15), A&D and others. It was Awoi‘s fourth anniversary.

On the March 18, 2009, the band released their fifth maxi-single, Insomnia. Awoi also performed at the visual kei event SCUBER DIVE with many other inide bands on the 31st of July in Osaka and on the 3rd of August in Tokyo. They then released their first mini-album, ZACRO, and followed up with the winter tour ZACROnic New World.

The year 2010 seemed to be slightly unlucky for Awoi. Drummer Hiro left the band due to personal reasons after their live at OSAKA MUSE on April 17th. However, the band didn't stop their activities. Moreover, they released their first album, Aoi, in July which contained songs from the band's previous releases.

In August they hired two new members to fill the gap. Hiro was replaced by new drummer Ryo and second guitarist SIN. This brought a slight change to the band's sound--it wasn't minimalistic anymore. With the new lineup, Awoi released the single abelcain, which was accompanied by a music video, the second in the band's career.

In 2011 the band had a busy live schedule. They held the tour message from the blindman to promote the album a cappella and the tour the child of CHILDREN to promote the mini-album CHILDREN. They also performed at OSAKA MUSE on October 22nd to celebrate their seventh anniversary.

In March 2012, the band released the mini-album Kumo no ito. In July, two years after their premiere, they re-released their first album, Aoi. Aoi~THE SECOND~ contained the same songs but was recorded with new members and was re-arranged for two guitarists. The album was also released in Europe, thanks to GanShin. Soon, another album was released--Birthday--also made available in Europe. It was, of course, followed by a nationwide tour, which ended with two final lives that took place on January 13th and 14th the next year at Shibuya Deseo.

Awoi started 2013 in high spirits, releasing the single Zetsubou no taiyou in April. The band made also its overseas debut at the anime convention Anime North 2013 in Toronto, Canada. Awoi ended the year with new mini-album Owari no MELODY, that came out on October 23rd.

In May 2014, Awoi's sixth mini-album Futekigo na Ringo hit stores. Everything seemed to be going well, but then Awoi suddenly announced it was to disband. The band's final releases were the greatest hits compilation AWOI BEST, and the single Black Hole. The official last live was held on October 22nd, the precise date of Awoi's 10th anniversary.
