Formed in 2005, the band was originally composed of four members: Masa and Yuina on guitars, Hachi on bass (all ex-Luecie), plus vocalist Mitsu. Takashi, (ex-Plastic Tree) joined Dolly on drums but was eventually replaced by tsuguki (ex-Clover).

The band entered the music scene in 2005, uncharacteristically, with a DVD, Screen of Indoors, which included the PV and live performance of Strawberry on the Scalp. They continued to release DVDs with their singles, establishing the importance of the visual in their work.

The year 2006 saw the releases of three singles including the first of their "Tricolore Opera" trilogy and the band's first mini-album, Cynical Closet, which was based on the concept of a "picture book." The next year, Dolly released three singles, as well as their first full album, jewel's dRIP.

In 2008, the band kept up an incredible pace with releases and lives. In February, their single Closet Letter went on sale and peaked at fourth on the Oricon chart. The next month, they released the limited edition of their new single Hana uta at their one-man at Shibuya O-East, following up with a countrywide solo tour in May. Their seventh maxi-single, JULIET, came out in June and also made it to fourth on the charts, and by September they already had another mini-album out; HeavenwOrd made it to 13th place on the Oricon indies album chart. In November, they held a third anniversary live, HeavenwArd, at Akasaka BLITZ. Dolly finished up the year with a bang, releasing their full album, Primary,Premium Best, in December.

In 2009 Dolly went major after signing with Universal Music. They released their debut major single Sai Collect Picture—produced by DIE from hide with Spread Beaver and RITSU from THE STALIN—in February, followed just two weeks later by the single Toki no ressha.

Toward the end of May, Dolly announced they would be going on hiatus due to guitarist Yuina’s illness that precluded their performance at Nihon Seinenkan on May 10th, the final show of their countrywide one-man tour Twilight railway. While waiting for his recovery, Dolly gave their fans something concrete to look forward to: two consecutive concerts at LIQUIDROOM ebisu on the 4th and 5th of November. To the disappointment of many fans, following these comeback lives, Yuina left the band.

Dolly is not slowing down, however. They made their first overseas appearance at Japan Nite at the music event SXSW 2010, which was held in Austin, Texas from March 17th to the 21st.
