As we head towards the end of 2024, various charts have been coming in showing the hits of the year. Earlier this month, streaming platform Spotify unveiled its year-end rankings.
While Sabrina Carpenter's Espresso was the top song globally and Taylor Swift took the top artist crown overall, the charts for Japan looked quite different.
The most-streamed song in Japan was hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts' Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,
which spent 125 days at number one on Spotify Japan's daily chart. However, Japan's top artist of the year was pop-rock band Mrs. GREEN APPLE, who also took the top spot in that category in 2023. They had four songs land in the top 10, including not
just their 2024 single
Lilac, but also tracks that weren't released this year such as Ao to natsu and Dance Hall, showing their sustained popularity.
While Bling-Bang-Bang-Born was also the most-streamed song by a Japanese artist internationally, the rest of the top 10 for overseas listeners diverged significantly from Japan's list, with many of the songs in the top 10 having been released in 2023 or
earlier. Six of the 10 tracks were tied to anime series, with two being theme songs for "Jujutsu Kaisen."
The top Japanese artist overseas was pop duo YOASOBI. This is their fourth consecutive year winning the title. Singer Ado landed
in second place, and she has racked up 14 songs that have been played on the platform over 100 million times, the most of any Japanese artist. A notable new addition to the top 10 artists overseas is ATLUS Sound Team, catapulted into third
place by the release of the soundtrack for the popular video game "Persona 3 Reload" this April.
