Popular teenage Harajuku model Kyary has bombarded online blogs with her eccentric fashion style, absurd hairpieces and hilarious facial expressions. Recently, she covered capsule’s jelly and has now released the ever-so catchy digital single, PONPONPON on July 20. Kyary has also released a debut mini album, Moshi Moshi Harajuku.
PONPONPON is an extremely catchy light-pop dance track. The interchange between “pon pon pon pon” and “way way way” during the hook and chorus is easy to remember and will undoubtedly get stuck in your head for hours on end. PONPONPON has similarities to both Perfume and capsule's works, most likely as capsule’s Yasutaka Nakata worked with Kyary for this release. The most memorable and important component of PONPONPON is of course, the PV. It is one of the most quirky PVs yet to be seen.
In the PV for PONPONPON, Kyary is surrounded by a blinding mess of brightly coloured objects and clothing. A combination of odd choreography, facial expressions, bright colours and typography across the screen makes the PV very mesmerizing and odd. Kyary dances along with some strange larger-framed figure doused in pink and seems to promote the message to viewers that "you can be anything you want, even this."
The single track is also available through iTunes Japan. PONPONPON is also included on Kyary’s debut mini album, Moshi Moshi Harajuku, released August 17, 2011 in Japan, and August 23 elsewhere.
