the pillows

A lot of bands seem to suffer from line-up changes and other difficulties that lead to activity stops or a disbandment after only a few years. the pillows however seem to have found a successful way to evade these problems as the band is still going strong and regularly releasing new music after twenty-two years. Comic Sonic is their newest release so far and is their thirty-third single since the trio started their career in 1989.

As usual, the single starts out with the title track Comic Sonic. The intro starts with a burst of energy with thunderous bouts of drums and heavy guitar. The verses are a little mellower, with a catchy bass riff in the foreground, offering a base for Yamanaka’s vocals. The chorus sounds very the pillows-esque, and even though it might not be the most original sound coming from the band, it is very catchy. When played live, this song will undoubtedly get the whole venue jumping.

Comic Sonic’s counterpart, Good Bye Present, somewhat works as a counterweight to the energetic title song. It’s slower with a nostalgic sound at times, though it is still quite an upbeat rock song. Also this song has plenty of catchy guitar riffs that play a large role in the song and even almost overrule Yamanaka’s vocals.

With this single, the pillows show that they’re still fit. With their ability to withstand the years, they are sure to rock for many years to come.
