My Foot

the pillows

For me it all started with four little letters; FLCL. That is how I was introduced to the pillows. Their flowing rhythms, drum beats that were reminescent of most American punk bands, and vocals which had range and were steeped with character, enveloped my ear drums and caused me to have to know more about this band. And so began my search for their entire discography.

After much searching I found it all, grabbed them up and called them my own, from their very first album ever; Pantomime, to their latest, My Foot. I became somewhat obsessed with them and over time, they took over my CD player.

Starting to release mainstream albums and singles in 1989, the pillows haven't gone through many changes, they had continuously stayed about where they were, sound-wise, but for them it was a success. They sounded alot like an indies band even when they became famous and that was what drew me to them more, they stuck to their roots.

My Foot, their 15th full-length album (!), is truely a masterpiece to this listener's ears. It is a break from the typicals of most JRock that is popular nowadays, less screaming and more playing. With the first track, My Foot, to the last, Gazelle City, you get assaulted with melodic interludes, crooning vocals and just some good, old-fashioned roots-rock. I could compare this album to a lot of Weezer's stuff if I must compare them to an English band.

The notable tracks that I see on here are My Foot, Third Eye and Sayonara Universe, but as I have said, the entire album is really worth the buy. If you find this album and would like a change of pace from what you normally listen to, or would just like to broaden your horizons, musically, I wholly reccommend this album and any of the pillows' stuff.
