Interview with KAMIJO

In an exclusive interview before his first solo concert in Brazil, KAMIJO revisited the three decades of his career, discussed his plans for the future and left a special message for Brazilian fans.

After almost a decade, KAMIJO returned to Brazil on May 24th, this time for his first solo show in the country — a moment eagerly awaited by both him and his fans. Known for his remarkable career leading the bands LAREINE and Versailles and for his solo work full of theatricality and sophistication, the artist reflected on the three decades of his career, the transformations of the visual kei scene and his ambitions for the future in a short interview before the show in Brazil.

It’s been almost 10 years since your last visit to Brazil. How does it feel to be back after all this time? What are some of your strongest memories of the country?

KAMIJO: When I was unable to perform live due to visa issues, a volunteer group of fans rented a crepe shop and held an event. It was a pity that we couldn't do the show, but we were very happy to see each other.

This will be your first solo concert in Brazil. What are your expectations for this performance?

KAMIJO: I see! It's our very first time! That's right. Last time it was at a crepe shop (laughs). Everyone in Brazil is always sending me their passionate feelings through SNS, so I would like to return those feelings with my songs. Expectations are more for me to meet than for them, so please look forward to it.

With a career spanning 30 years and many memorable projects along the way, what would you say have been the most defining moments of your journey? And how do you view your growth as both an artist and an individual over the years?

KAMIJO: Every era has had its big moments. I would venture to say that I was filled with the greatest sense of fulfillment when I celebrated my 10th solo anniversary. But the fulfillment always disappears quickly. I know that it makes me grow.

The visual kei scene has evolved significantly over the years, facing challenges such as the pandemic, as well as the rise of new technologies, social media and streaming platforms. From your perspective, what has changed the most since you began your career? And how do you see the future of visual kei?

KAMIJO: Is it really an evolution? When I started my career, I was polished by playing with more diverse bands, not limited by the scene. I expect that the real evolution is yet to come.

In 2024, you announced your upcoming move to the United States following THE AMERICAS TOUR 2025 -MASTERPIECE-. That’s a major life decision — could you share more about what inspired it?

KAMIJO: I guess the emptiness that came after the fulfillment of the 10th anniversary made me decide to emigrate. It is to keep myself from getting bored.

You’ve also mentioned plans to study film music production. What sparked your interest in that field?

KAMIJO: It was inevitable that I became interested in music that was close to visuals. It was probably the influence of Paul Moriah and Richard Clayderman, whom I had been listening to since I was a child, before I had even started playing in bands. Studying film music is an inevitable path if you want to become a true visual artist!

Speaking of film, which movie soundtracks are your favorite or have left a lasting impression on you?

KAMIJO: I think the "Angels and Demons" soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is really great. I want to create a soundtrack for my fans' lives.

Looking ahead, how do you envision the next chapter of your career? Is there a particular dream or goal you still hope to achieve?

KAMIJO: The goal is to be reborn alive. I’m excited to embark on a new path with the memories and experiences of my previous lives.

Finally, please leave a message for your Brazilian fans.

KAMIJO: Thank you so much for your patience. I am so happy to finally meet you all. My show is like a work of art. I am happy to be able to create that work together. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone in Brazil.

JaME would like to thank KAMIJO and Evol Prod for the interview.
