Interview with THE GALLO

THE GALLO is coming to devour your dreams.

Earlier this year, it was announced that visual kei band THE GALLO and alternative idol unit BURST GIRL would be double-headlining Phoenix, Arizona's Saboten Con. Unfortunately, as the COVID-19 crisis has led to the cancellation of a number of spring and summer events, it is currently somewhat difficult to predict whether their overseas debut will still be able to take place this year. However, we'd still like to take the opportunity to introduce THE GALLO to any readers unfamiliar with their work and to give existing fans some insight into their current mindset.

In this interview, the members shared some quick thoughts about their unique style, dreams, their hopes for their trip to America, and how they've evolved throughout their 11-year career.

In your opinion, what sets THE GALLO apart from other visual kei bands?

Jojo: We're a gathering of genius inventors.

Wajow: The number of us who come from Hokkaido.

Nov: Our individuality.

Andy: Our music style.

Kaede: Our concept, songs and stage performance.

If you had to choose just one song to recommend to any readers who haven’t heard your music before, which one would you choose?

Jojo: VITCH.

Wajow: Tokyo Cinderella.

Nov: I can't settle on just one song...

Andy: INCUBUS.

Kaede: Tokyo Cinderella.

You have mentioned in the past that your concept deals with nightmares and eating the dreams of fans. What drew you to this theme? Do you have particularly vivid dreams or nightmares yourselves?

Jojo: Because we're demons who eat dreams.

Wajow: I have a lot of bad dreams so I want them to be devoured.

Nov: I remember that I have had dreams but I never remember what they're about.

Andy: I don't have dreams much.

Kaede: I don't have dreams.

You’re known for having some rather outrageous lyrics. Are there any lines that stand out to you, for positive or negative reasons, when you look back on your work?

Jojo: All of them.

Wajow: Kokkeiron Souzouhen, because we shake bags.

Nov: All of the songs, melodies and lyrics are catchy.

Andy: I think that Tokyo Cinderella is great because it has a storyline.

Kaede: I don't know how these songs convey when translated into English, so choose whichever you please to listen to.

What can you tell us about your recent singles VITCH and DEATHTOPIA? The covers of both singles feature parodies of famous Disney logos – are they linked conceptually somehow?

Jojo: It's a secret.

Speaking of Disney, the spell “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” from “Cinderella” features very prominently in VITCH. Are you fans of Disney movies? If so, is there a particular one that you like or relate to?

Jojo: "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure".

Wajow: The only Disney movie I've ever seen is "Dumbo".

Nov: "Pinocchio".

Andy: "Monsters Inc".

Kaede: "Mulan".

You just celebrated your 10th anniversary in 2019. What are you most proud of when you look back on your career as THE GALLO so far?

Jojo: Our Japanese spirit.

Wajow: My dick.

Nov: Playing music as THE GALLO.

Andy: Our unity.

Kaede: Creativity.

How did you choose the tracks to include on your 10th anniversary best-of album “Kokkeigaku -GALLOXY-“?

Jojo: We chose songs that represent THE GALLO to be the focus of the release.

How has THE GALLO evolved over the past 10 years? Have there been any changes to the way you think about making or performing music?

Jojo: We are aiming to be the best in the world.

Wajow: I don't know if it's evolution, but we got rid of anything useless. For making songs and performing we will continue to change.

Nov: I don't think the basis of us has changed, but my hair colour has.

Andy: We are trying to not forget what it's like to be beginners.

Kaede: We do whatever we decide to do at the time with dedication.

What are you looking forward to experiencing during your US debut at Saboten Con this September?

Jojo: Food.

Wajow: Beautiful blonde women.

Nov: My first visit to America.

Andy: It's my first time ever going to America so I'm looking forward to it all.

Kaede: It'll be great if we can actually go...

Since you will be performing at an anime convention, do you have any interest in anime or gaming? Are there any series or characters you’d like to see cosplay of?

Jojo: "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure".

Wajow: I don't play games, but I like anime. I want to see lots of revealing cosplay.

Nov: In the past I really liked this game called "The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls".

Andy: Recently I've been watching "Demon Slayer".

Kaede: Not really.

What else can fans look forward to from THE GALLO in 2020?

Jojo: The greatest nightmare.

Wajow: If we've got the energy we can do anything.

Nov: I want to reply that I want to know what they're expecting.

Andy: The songs we're going to release from here on.

Kaede: New release.

Please leave a message for your overseas fans.

Jojo: I love my bitches♡.

Wajow: Stay Home.

Nov: I LOVE YOU.

Andy: We will continue to evolve as THE GALLO, so please think kindly of us.

Kaede: Pray for world.
