The doom/death metal trio was formed in 1996, following a change in line up and name from Compromise You Need to COFFINS. Under the new name, Hirai, Uchino, Aniki and former Church of Misery member Yoshiaki Negishi made their debut only in December 1997. At that time, Uchino, current vocalist and guitarist of the band, was active on the drums but changed to his current position in 1999/2000 when Yoshiaki Negishi left the band and YOU was recruited as their new drummer.

The same year, guitarist Aniki also left the band and COFFINS' sound changed its direction to doom metal, inspired by bands like Cathedral and Kyuss. Incidentally, the three musicians, however, were busy with other projects and so COFFINS was laid to rest in 2000. Three years later Uchino and YOU re-formed the band again, together with Nobuyuki Sentou on bass. With their first official release Demo 2003 they changed their sound to doom/death metal.

Their first LP Mortuary in Darkness was released in 2005 on the American label Razorback. After the release of Sacrifice To Evil Spirit and Mala Suerte/COFFINS, they published another compilation album and a split single. There was also less positive news for the fans as bassist Nobuyuki Sentou left the band in December that year due to musical differences and was replaced after the New Year by Koreeda. After this, the until 2010 existing line up was complete.

In September 2006 the second album, The Other Side Of Blasphemy and only one year later, three split singles done in collaboration with Otesánek, Cianide and The Arm And Sword Of A Bastard God were released.

2008 was a busy year for COFFINS who surprised their fans with a new LP titled Buried Death and two further split singles in collaboration with XXX Maniak and Skullhog. The band also followed this concept in the next year and worked with Spun In Darkness and lobotomized for more split releases. In addition, they also released Warhead.

In the beginning of 2010 drummer YOU was replaced by RYO and the band worked with Stormcrow on another split single the same year. COFFINS has announced their tour plans for 2011 that will lead them all across central Europe in April.
