Ghost was formed in 1984 in Tokyo. In the beginning of their career, they only played improv. They started recording in 1988, but it wasnt until 1990 that they released their debut album, Ghost. In 1991 their song Tama Yura was featured on the compilation album Tokyo Flashback Volume 1. They were also featured on the next two volumes.
Since their first album they have released an album every two years until 1996. In 1997 the American label Drag City re-released the three albums Ghost had released on PSF before. The re-releases appeared in both CD and LP versions. By 2004, the band toured through the US and a year later they released their first DVD, which also came with a CD; Metamorphosis: Ghost Chronicles 1984-2004.
Over the next few years, Ghost had various live activity, but by winter 2006 had once again hit the recording studios and debuted the album In Stormy Nights in January 2007. The LP version of this album contains an extra song, which does not appear on the CD version. In May of the same year, the band embarked on a tour to Europe, playing the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and more for a total of twelve stops in eight countries. Before the year was out, they also release a live album, Overture.
The following year, vocalist Masaki Batoh collaborated with Helena Espvall, a famous cellist, and the two put out a self titled album. In 2009, the group went to Germany, performing a concert in Berlin.
Since that time, Ghost has had little activity, but in 2010, Masaki Batoh began a solo tour throughout the US, with numerous stops in California and Massachusetts.
It is unsure if the band's activity will pick up in the coming years, but with 2011 around the corner, fans can remain hopeful.
