Haling from Nara, Root Thumm began as a quartet in 2007. The same year, the band took part in the contest "Synthesizer Performance" and received a prestigious award from Hideki Matsutake of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Minoru Mukaiya of Casiopea.

In 2008, their first single autumn love was released and reached the iTunes Store electronic songs Top 10 chart. A few months later, their first mini-album seek a floria followed. However, fans were greeted with primarily silence as they waited almost two years before the release of the band's first album, Coton, in December of 2009.

On June 15th 2010, Benjamin AKAI announced on his official site that he would leave the band and continue solo. As a trio, the band participated at the Japan Expo event in Paris, France. That same month, the band released its second album, YAMATOPIA.
