Quruli

Quruli was formed in Kyoto in 1996 by three friends who'd all met at a music club in Ritsumeikan University; Shigeru Kishida, Masashi Sato, and Nobuyuki Mori. The next year, they released a demo CD that quickly sold out and was then followed by their first album, Moshi-Moshi, which they had recorded in a home studio. They quickly gained popularity, which brought them soon to the attention of Victor Entertainment who then signed the band.

Each new release seemed to bring in a fresh wave of attention and fans for Quruli, who also appeared in many music festivals including the famous Fuji Rock Festival. In 2001, the band underwent some changes as guitarist Tasshin Omura joined them and drummer Nobuyuki Mori left. Christopher McGuire joined in his stead and the band went on a fourty-five stop tour, including one show held at the huge Nippon Budokan, in addition to recording the sound track for the film 'Joze to Tora to Sakana-tachi'. In 2004, they released their fifth album, antenna, and appeared at the famous SXSW Festival held in Austin, Texas, where they experienced a very warm welcome from the international audience. Unfortunately, at the end of that year, McGuire left Quruli.

It was around this time that they founded a new label known as Noise McCartney Records and Shigeru and Masashi started a side project known as SINGER SONGER with female vocalist, Cocco. Their attention thankfully returned to Quruli once again in 2006 and the band released Best of Quruli / TOWER OF MUSIC LOVER to celebrate their tenth anniversary. The band did suffer some bad news around this time, however, as Tasshin Omura decided to leave the group.

As 2007 began, Yuya Kikuchi joined Quruli as a support drummer and the band visited Vienna, Austria to record their Jubilee single as well as their newest album, Tanz Walzer. With this, they became the first Japanese band to record in Vienna and the influence of the country can be felt in their album. Though Quruli has been around for over a decade now, this group of dedicated and talented musicians shows no sign of slowing down and one can only hope that they will soon become as popular overseas as they are in their home country.
