Shimon Masato's Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun, which was first released in 1975, was re-released for the first time in nine years last week. The single was reissued in mini-CD format in 1992 and saw a revival in 1999, charting at #74 on the Oricon. Last month Pony Canyon announced that it was re-releasing the single on March 5th, this time in CD format. It sold roughly 4,000 copies in its first week of sales to chart at #32, its first top 50 position since 1976.
More impressively however, the song has established itself as the best-selling single of Japan in the Guinness Book of World Records for selling an estimated 4,550,000 copies.
