The duo Schwarz Stein was founded in 2001 by vocalist Kaya and keyboardist Hora. Unlike most other visual kei bands, their music wasn't based on acoustic instruments but on electronic music ranging from melodic futurepop to the hard, gothic end of EBM coupled with Kaya's dark and imaginative lyrics that centered on topics like gender identity and artificial life forms. Despite their growing popularity, the band split up in 2004 due to artistic differences.
