The day before their performance at Lucca Comics & Games in Italy, we met the two members of the band Pinky Doodle Poodle for a short interview.
Welcome back to Italy!
Pinky Doodle Poodle: Thank you!
This is not your first time performing at an anime convention, nor your first time in Italy. How do you feel about it?
YURIA: We are very happy to perform at Lucca Comics in front of a lot of people.
Have you ever been to Italy outside the band’s projects?
George: No, we haven’t.
Is there anything you would like to see here?
George: (laughs) People in our staff recommended we visit Tuscany, because we could eat delicious food and drink exquisite drinks there!
What about our country has had a big impact on you?
(George and YURIA talk to each other)
George: At first we were so surprised to see Italians’ noses…they are so big! (everyone laughs) The first time I saw someone with such a nose, I lost my words (laughs).
YURIA: Very “kakkoii” ("cool")!
George: In Japan, we usually have a flat nose…
You know, in Italy everyone thinks a big nose is ugly…
George: Ugly…?...No!! (everyone laughs)
You’re quite new to the scene, though you performed more in Europe than in Japan. Do you see differences between performing in Japan and overseas?
YURIA: The Japanese audience is shyer than the European ones. In Japan the audience is really good, but they don’t move, they don’t show emotions during the show. The first time we came to Europe everything was like “WOOOOAH!!!” Very different!
Who started the band?
YURIA: We used to have three members: me, George and a bassist. We were friends, we hung out together and we used to go drinking (smiles). We always talked about starting a band.
YURIA, the music you make now is totally different from what you used to do. Do you find anything different, and what kind of music do you find easiest to do?
YURIA: I have no preferences. My solo work as YURIA is my job (laughs), so I used to deal with songs created by others and they told me how to do it and how to sing it. What I do now is completely free, I have no pressures!
Many of your fans are not familiar with Japanese: could you please explain what your songs are about?
YURIA: George creates the music.
George: Yes, I make the music. I love crossing-rock, most of PDP's tracks are inspired by bands like AC/DC, Motorhead and Foo Fighters. She (points at YURIA) writes the lyrics and we think our songs are old-style rock.
YURIA: My lyrics are not bad, they are positive! (laughs) But I always sing in Japanese!
George: Yes, she sings in Japanese, but our lyrics are always positive.
Is there any upcoming release for Pinky Doodle Poodle? Like an album, or a single?
YURIA: No, we have nothing planned as of now.
What do you expect from tomorrow’s concert?
YURIA: …Nice weather! (everyone laughs)
George: Sun! Not rain!
Think positive!
PDP: You’re right! (laugh)
YURIA: We hope a lot of people will come to see us and they will give us a lot of energy, and of course we want them to have fun!
Lastly, could you please send a message to your Italian fans?
George: We will be so happy if you enjoy our music and our performance… (in English) Please, enjoy!
Thank you, we hope everything will run smoothly tomorrow!
PDP: Thank you very much!
JaME would like to thank Ramen Events, Gloria and Pinky Doodle Poodle for this interview.
