Zy 54: Keiyu (Kra)

interview - 12.14.2010 19:01

nostalgic pop and futuristic rock

Kra has finished up a new album! It will be on sale November 24th. The album title GURICO, similar to a famous chocolate brand here in Japan, gives us all a fond, sweet feeling, while in the album the band goes back to explore their roots. This time, we had an interview with the vocalist Keiyu representing the band. We asked him about the story surrounding the creation of this work and the town of Asakusa, where they were on location.

Actually, this interview is a little earlier in the production schedule than usual, so we haven’t gotten much information on the new album. So you will have to tell me everything. (laugh) First of all, tell me about the title. It makes quite an impact.

Keiyu: Well basically, we had a meeting one day in the office with our manager and staff, and we indicated that we wanted to make our next album like a sweet. The company boss just happened to be walking by the office and asked us what we were doing and we told her that we were discussing the album title. Then she joined us. (laugh)

I sort of understand how that went. (laugh)

Keiyu: We first thought of the name “Like chocolate”, and then our brainstorming somehow took us to caramel. (Smile) Then suddenly she says “Glico! Glico! Glico!” (laugh) I was worried about the possibility of a lawsuit, but the boss said that the spelling is different so it should be okay.

Wow… It’s a cool name, kind of retro… But if you guys didn’t like it you wouldn’t have used it right?

Keiyu: Yes. It’s kind of cute, and when we write it in the Roman alphabet as “GURICO” it kind of looks like “G○○CI." (laugh)

…..(smile)

Keiyu: Imagine if we turned it into a logo… it would be kind of cool.

I see. (laugh) So the title was decided, and how about the songs in the album? From the name I imagine there are many pop songs that are sweet like “GURICO”, right?

Keiyu: Well, rather unexpectedly … no.(smile) But some of the song names are like that, like Ringo to hachimitsu (Apple and honey). Cute name, but the content is not so cute…

Oh, you guys are good at that.

Keiyu: Yeah, I think that there is a lot of that this time.

You like that kind of pattern, where the title is cute while the lyrics are bitter.

Keiyu: Cute on the outside, with a deeper something on the inside.
