Zy 54: girugamesh

interview - 11.19.2010 19:01

Tracks of heart beats

On October 6th, girugamesh will release their new single Inochi no ki, which they played for their live concert audience at Shibuya O-WEST, the final live of their summer tour. While continuing the vocal style seen in COLOR, this song has an added dance element. Furthermore, the yet to be released Vision and Endless Wing show off a western music style with the latter having a digital rock tune. Their autumn tour will begin on October 2nd where the band will show us all the new things that they are doing.

Your new single Inochi no ki continues the vocal style heard in COLOR. It’s an interesting song because it’s like a ballad but it is also danceable.

Яyo: The song was more melodic at first. Audiences would listen to it quietly in our lives. But we thought it didn’t match girugamesh, so we put in dance elements and put in what I call a "chiki-chiki" sound.

ShuU: I think that if we were not in the middle of doing a tour it would have been more of a ballad, but as we were playing it in our lives, we wanted it to be something that hooks people.

Were you recording during your summer tour?

ShuU: No, we finished recording the drums and bass before the tour, but as Яyo said before, its arrangement was more melodic.

Яyo: As we played it in our lives, we realized we wanted people to dance more, so we put in guitar sounds and arranged it in hotels during our tour, and then it took its current shape.

Nii: We had time work on the guitar sounds, and originally the intro wasn’t like it is now. When we were playing it live, we thought we needed more melody in the intro so we changed it. It was originally part of a guitar solo.

Really!? I thought you made that phrase first as the theme of the song and then you put it into the guitar solo too.

Nii: No. But the riff was impressive so we wanted to use it somewhere else apart from the guitar solo.

Яyo: We'd never done something like that before, so I wanted to try it.

As you polished the arrangement during the tour, did you write the lyrics then too?

Satoshi: Yes.

Did you meet any beautiful girls during the tour? (laugh)

Satoshi: No, not at all. (laugh)

You just made all of your fans into your enemy now. (laugh)

Satoshi: Oh, no, no. I mean I met many. (laugh)

I got the impression that the song was about a broken heart, which would be a first for girugamesh, am I wrong?

Satoshi: What I wanted to say most was that we sometimes have to make sacrifices to carry out our goals, and notice the importance of things that are precious to us especially after we lose them.
