Zy 49: Plastic Tree

interview - 12.29.2009 19:01

Dreaming in the sickroom...

Plastic Tree released their new single Sanatorium on October 28th. It’s an impressive emotional number with sad calm melodies. We asked about their lyrics, inside stories behind the creation of Pied Piper (the coupling number on the new single) and of course their future plans. I hope that you enjoy this interview, as much as I did.

The new single’s title Sanatorium matches so well. (laugh)

Arimura Ryutaro: You think so? I think the word really matches the song. As I was writing the lyrics, it wasn’t blurred and it just came to me. It was actually a song that Tadashi originally made and as we played it together, the title appeared.

Tadashi, didn’t you make the song to fit the image of Sanatorium?

Hasegawa Tadashi: No, I already had the refrain in that song from before. I'd tried it in various arrangements from acoustic to something for a band. This time it took a particular shape that we liked best, so we used it.

What did you think about the guitar part?

Nakayama Akira: I don’t really stick to what was written anyway, (laugh), so it wasn’t like I played guitar phrases to the best of my ability. It wasn’t the kind of day I would record my guitar playing, but I did anyway. Tadashi also happened to record very quickly.

KenKen, are you used to recording drums?

Satou KenKen: Yeah...I got used to it.

There was an interval for you there. (laugh)

KenKen: I tried different things, you know, changing my drum sticks and so on. It was pretty tough to restrain myself when I hit the drums for the PV. (smile) Whenever I play in a band, I can’t help playing hard.

It’s not a song that's driven by power.

KenKen: Yeah, so the director said to me, “Please tone it down a little bit more,” when we were shooting the PV. (smile)
